City Council Blindsides Thunder Swamp
September 28th, 2011
(East Wenatchee, WA)…It wasn’t on the agenda and there was no advanced warning, but the East Wenatchee City Council voted 5-2 to end its contract with the United States Sprint Boat Racing Association and the Vickery family, who own and leased the property for the Thunder Swamp Sprint Boat Race. This action was taken despite a public hearing on the matter one week ago with the vast majority of the fully-attended meeting speaking in favor of continuing the City’s involvement in Thunder Swamp.
Mayor Steve Lacy publicly changed his stance on Thunder Swamp prior to the conclusion of the September 22nd hearing. He said, “…my heart tells me one thing but my mind tells me we should scale back our financial commitment to the boat races.” This took many by surprise who spoke in favor of and had volunteered to put on Thunder Swamp. But the mutual feeling was that the mayor would lead the council in continued financial support, albeit at reduced amounts each year.
Mayoral candidate and current Councilman Steve Bremmer went so far as to suggest the Council do away with the Events Board altogether and go to a strict-voluntary force to put on City events. The discussion went nowhere, however, and a vote was not called for on Bremmer’s recommendation.
The timing of Tuesday’s vote comes just four days before the City’s Events Board is to put on one of its big events of the year, the “Wings and Wheels Festival” celebrating the 1931 trans-Pacific flight of Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon from Misawa, Japan to East Wenatchee.
We’re confident Wings & Wheels will go off without a hitch, however we can’t imagine the kicked-in-the-gut feeling those on the Events Board and Staff must feel after what has occurred this week. We wish Dawn and everyone good luck at this weekend’s event and to let us know if there’s anything we can do to help.
