Countdown to Thunder Swamp

September 1st, 2010

A quick look at the Thunder Swamp dot com website will tell you there’s less than three days until the first-ever sprint boat race in East Wenatchee. Work continues on site to prepare the course and surrounding grounds for the boats and fans this Saturday. Yesterday, workers pounded poles and strung chain-link safety fencing around the water course and areas were marked out for the pits, beer garden, camping and parking.

Thunder Swamp is the name given to the site where the United States Sprint Boat Racing Association will hold its first event at 10am Saturday. Sprint Boats feature huge horsepower engines packed into a little, 13-foot boat and they race around a labyrinth of canals against the clock. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for youth 6-to-12. There will be a $2 charge for parking on-site and camping will be permitted Friday and Saturday night for $10 per night. Tickets are on sale at Wenatchee Valley Mall, Town Toyota Center box office and on-line at www.thunderswamp.com.

Prior to Saturday’s race, boats and drivers will be featured at a Show-n-Shine Friday from 5-to-8pm in the parking lot in front of Macy’s at the Wenatchee Valley Mall. Fans can buy tickets and souvenir t-shirts at Friday’s event, meet the drivers, see the boats up close and get pictures taken. The mall will also be the pickup spot for fans on the shuttle bus Saturday morning beginning at 8am and every half-hour until 10:30. The shuttle bus is being provided by the Wenatchee Wild.
